PRINCETON, N.J. – Battling windy and rainy conditions, the Northeastern men’s rowing team kicked off its spring season in style with a win in the first varsity eight, knocking off the UPenn Quakers by just under three seconds, earning its sixth-straight Burk Cup on Saturday afternoon.
Northeastern has held the Burk Cup since 2016, winning all races held since then. The Cup also has resided at Henderson boathouse in 18 of the last 21 seasons, and 30 of 52 overall.
Coxed by fifth year and captain Will Dempsey, the first varsity got off to a strong start, and led through the entire race. The advantage continued to increase down the course, and the Huskies finished ahead of the Quakers at 6:09.45. UPenn finished at 6:12.23.
Stroked freshman Cameron MacGillivray, the second varsity got off to a fast start, leading by a few seats of open water through the middle of the race. UPenn closed the gap down the stretch, but Northeastern held on to cross the line at 6:22.79, roughly 5-6 seats ahead of the Quakers (6:24.31).
The third varsity and fourth varsity boats got off to solid starts in their respective races, but UPenn pulled ahead and ultimately won both. The Quakers finished at 6:31.5 in the 3V, 5.9 seconds ahead of the Huskies (6:37.4). UPenn crossed the line at 6:47.98 in the 4V, while Northeastern finished at 6:51.42.
The Huskies will head to IRA Invitational in Sarasota, Florida on March 29-30.
