Zimbabwe’s Micheen Thornycroft, a Rhodes University graduate student and coach and two-time Olympic rower, is the newest recipient of World Rowing’s Filippi Spirit Award. Given annually to university rowers who demonstrate rowing’s core values in their life, this year’s Spirit Award nominees also included South Africans Rain de Jager of Wits University Boat Club and Mzwandile Sotsaka of the University of Johannesburg; Vladimir Gluhovic of Belgrade University Rowing Club; and Seun Olusanya, president of the Exeter University Boat Club in Great Britain. The winner’s program receives a new Filippi eight.
