Brown Catches Washington To Win Henley

A record entry of 862 crews at Henley Royal Regatta brought some of the world’s fastest youth, college, club, and national team athletes to the sport’s grandest event.

Brown University women trailed University of Washington early but stormed back to win the Island Challenge Cup for student crews, a relatively new (since 2021) event added as the 187-year-old regatta works towards gender equity in events offered.

A Washington crew of second and third varsity oarsmen raced in the final of the Temple Challenge Cup for student crews, losing to a University of Cambridge crew.

A combination crew racing as Harvard and Cambridge was the only other U.S. crew to race on Sunday, finals day, at Henley this year. A rematch of RowAmerica Rye and Chicago Rowing Foundation, first and second in the women’s eight at June’s USRowing Youth Nationals, was spoiled by each crew losing in Saturday semifinals against British schoolgirl crews, including eventual winner Headington School.

Great Britain national team eights won the final-only Grand Challenge Cup and Remenham Challenge Cups for elite crews, both against Italian national team crews. A week after winning Lucerne, Lauren Henry beat Magdalena Lobnig to win the Princess Royal Challenge Cup for elite women’s single sculls. Olympic champion Ollie Zeidler ran his total of Diamond Challenge Sculls wins to five, out-racing a game challenge from Portugal’s D.M.V. Goncalves.
