University of Iowa rowing head coach Jeff Garbutt received a contract extension through 2029, Iowa’s Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics Chair Beth Goetz announced.

The Hawkeyes finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships in Garbutt’s first two seasons as head coach (2022, 2023). During the 2023 season, Iowa spent 10 consecutive weeks in the CRCA Pocock Poll receiving votes. Garbutt has also expanded Iowa’s international recruiting, adding 16 international athletes since becoming head coach.
Under Garbutt’s leadership, four student-athletes have earned All-Big Ten honors, 22 have been named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars and one earned College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-America honorable mention recognition.
Garbutt previously coached at Miami (Fla.) in 2013, served as an assistant at Iowa from 2013-20, and returned to Iowa City from La Salle, where he led the men’s and women’s programs from 2020-21. Garbutt was on the Hawkeye staff in 2017 and 2018 when Iowa was named CRCA Region 4 Staff of the Year. In 2017, Iowa placed 12th nationally at the NCAA Championships. The following year, the Hawkeyes placed a program-best fourth in the Big Ten and set a school scoring record at the NCAA Championships, scoring 69 points and finishing 11th.
Last season, Iowa finished 10th out of 11 teams with 66 points at the Big Ten Rowing Championships, won by league newcomer Washington with 264 points. The 2026 Big Ten Rowing Championships are scheduled for May 16-17 at the Indianapolis Rowing Center.
