The University of Washington’s men’s varsity heavyweights caught and passed rival Cal in the last few hundred meters of the grand final to claim the Huskies’ third-straight IRA national championship, and 22nd overall, May 31 on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. Washington also earned the James Ten Eyck Memorial Trophy for overall points with the victory, their 20th overall, and 16th in the last 19 years.
“That’s as good as it gets,” said Washington head coach Michael Callahan. “I don’t know if I’ve ever coached a faster boat or a more cohesive crew.”
Connecticut’s Trinity College repeated as Division III national champions and the Princeton women and Harvard men won the lightweight national championships for the third year running.
