One of North America’s great regattas is underway this week as rowers descend on St. Catharines, Ontario, for the 142nd Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
Racing opens Sunday, Aug. 2, with the Royal Canadian Henley Masters Regatta on the Martindale Waterway before the six-day main regatta begins Tuesday. A total of 2,183 entries from 127 clubs will compete on the historic course that has hosted multiple World Rowing Championships, Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association championships, and, at one time or another, most of North America’s best rowers. To race at Canadian Henley is to come of age as a rower.
The Royal Canadian Henley Masters Regatta returns with the same event lineup introduced last year, giving organizers and competitors a second season under the revised format before considering any future changes.
The biggest change for the main regatta is a simplified schedule. Racing each day will proceed in numerical event order, with heats, semifinals, and finals spread across multiple days whenever possible to reduce scheduling conflicts for athletes entered in multiple events. Saturday’s popular Dash events remain at the end of the day’s racing.
