Scott McKee, 65, the former heavyweight coach and director of rowing at Columbia University, died Oct. 28 from cancer.
McKee rowed at Rutgers, Columbia, and on the 1985 U.S. National Team. He played a key role in launching the $6-million renovation of Columbia’s boathouse and coached nearly 2,000 athletes.
“Scott was an inspirational person to so many people in the rowing world and beyond,” said Tom Terhaar, Columbia’s director of rowing. “His competitiveness, sense of humor, patience, and kindness were felt by everyone who knew him.
“Scott inspired generations of athletes, coaches, and future coaches at a profound level. He was humble, generous, and wise beyond his years, and the name Scott McKee will bring a smile always to the face of anyone who knew him. Rutgers crew and Columbia rowing have lost a very special person.”
