CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team had an extremely successful day on the Cooper River Saturday, with four boats winning titles and the Quakers bringing the Doc Hosea Points Trophy to Boathouse Row. In addition, the Varsity Eight secured the Orange Challenge Cup.
Penn won the title across all three NCAA boats (Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four) and also in the Third Varsity Eight division, all four of those boats going undefeated in morning heats and afternoon finals. The Second Varsity Four, meanwhile, took second to Rutgers in its final.

Varsity Eight
Tenth-ranked Penn won its six-boat morning heat in 6:26.86, with second-place Northeastern finishing a little more than four seconds behind the Quakers. In the final. Penn shaved more than nine seconds off its time in clocking 6:17.69 which was more than three seconds ahead of 13th-ranked Rutgers (6:20.98) and more than 10 seconds ahead of Northeastern (6:27.88). Clemson was fourth, Columbia was fifth, and George Washington was sixth in the final.
The two wins over the Huskies, coupled with wins over Syracuse last week at the Big Ivy Dustup, allowed the 1V8 to bring the Orange Challenge Cup home from the Coop.
Second Varsity Eight
Penn easily won its morning heat, clocking 6:35.03 which was more than 15 seconds ahead of second-place Northeastern. In the afternoon final, Penn nearly met its earlier time with a 6:35.54 clocking, finishing nearly five minutes ahead of Rutgers (6:40.23) and 12 seconds ahead of third-place Columbia (6:47.33). Northeastern, Clemson and GW were also in the final.
Varsity Four
Another easy win in the morning, Penn’s 7:24.48 well ahead of second-place Northeastern (7:48.29). In the final, the Quakers shaved nearly four seconds off their earlier time by clocking 7:20.88 which was three seconds ahead of Rutgers (7:23.98) and 12 ahead of third-place Northeastern (7:32.89). Columbia, Clemson and Rhode Island rounded out the final field.
Third Varsity Eight
Penn clocked 6:55.83 and was the only boat to clear seven minutes in the morning, then followed up with a six-second win in the final in 6:51.66. Northeastern was second, in 6:57.69, followed by Columbia (7:07.15), Georgetown, Northeastern’s 4V8, and Rutgers.
Second Varsity Four
Penn bested Rutgers in the heat, clocking 7:35.88 to the Scarlet Knights’ 7:45.98, but the tables were turned in the final as Rutgers covered the course in 7:26.97 while Penn clocked 7:30.57. Columbia was third, in 7:32.91, followed by Rutgers V4C and Northeastern.
Penn also had a Third Varsity Four row on Saturday, and the Quakers took second in the V4B petite final in 7:50.80, behind Navy (7:46.10).
