What remained of the 2020 World Rowing schedule was officially cancelled today.

FISA made the announcement that it will not hold the World Championship regattas that remained on the schedule including the 2020 World Rowing Senior, Under 23 and Junior Championships, the 2020 World Rowing Masters Regatta, the 2020 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals and Coastal Championships, and the 2020 World Rowing Tour in American Samoa. The cancellations were made in the following announcement

Of the four regatta cancellations, the 2020 World Rowing Masters Regatta, the 2020 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals and Coastal Championships regattas will be staged in 2021, but FISA said it is not considering this a postponement as the 2021 iterations were already planned.

USRowing followed with a statement supporting the FISA decision.

“USRowing fully supports FISA’s announcement today of the cancellation of the 2020 World Rowing Senior, Under 23 and Junior Championships, as well as the 2020 World Masters Regatta, 2020 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals and Coastal Championships, and 2020 World Rowing Tour in American Samoa,” Brett Johnson, senior director, programs and communications at USRowing said. “As with FISA, our priority is to put the health and well-being of our global communities and athletes first. USRowing continues to thank all of the individuals working on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic for everything they are doing to keep us healthy and safe. We look forward to the chance to compete internationally next year.”

The 2020 World Rowing Tour in American Samoa will be rescheduled “if possible” according to the FISA release.

“These decisions have been reached after an assessment of all possible solutions based on the current advice from the World Health Organisation and taking into account the responsibility of our community on limiting the amount of inter-continental travel,” read the release.

FISA also wrote in the release that “stakeholder consultations” were taking place over the next ten days to determine the course of the 2021 World Rowing event season and the rescheduling of the remaining Olympic and Paralympic qualification regattas.
