Held at Boston University’s Agganis Arena, the World Indoor Rowing Championships remains the gold standard for self-inflicted pain that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Opening Day Like the presidential primaries, there seems to be some jockeying for first-in-the-nation status among Opening Day regattas. The winner, at least for now, is Sebastian River High School Crew, whose Henley-style contest—open to open, masters, and youth competitors—beats Seattle’s iconic season opener to the punch.

Pacific Novice Invitational San Francisco’s youth-focused Pacific Rowing Club hosts the annual Pacific Novice Invitational, where first-time rowers get to develop their race legs on the scenic Lake Merced. Sarasota Invitational The Sarasota Invitational Regatta launches the spring race season at Florida’s Nathan Benderson Park, the host venue for the 2017 world championships. Open to junior, scholastic, masters, and adaptive athletes, the two-day regatta attracts more than 1,500 athletes and spectators drawn to high-caliber racing on a world-class venue.

Faultline Face-off Invitational Oakland Strokes hosts the annual Faultline Face-off junior invitational on California’s San Pablo Reservoir.
